Urban myths can be a lot of fun to share with friends when you’re a kid. Remember the one about popping candy and cola? Or those old-fashioned chain letters that supposedly would cause bad luck if you didn’t rewrite them and send them to ten unwitting friends? Well, while you may have outgrown that kind of thing, there are still adult versions out there, such as the myth that root canals cause cancer. Here’s how that one got started, and why there’s no need to worry about this dangerous fable.
What is a Root Canal?
A root canal is a dental procedure designed to save an infected tooth and prevent the infection from spreading to other teeth. Your dentist will open the tooth and drain the infected pulp, replacing it with a synthetic material to keep it stable and infection free. Once it is replaced, it will be sealed up with a filling, and your tooth will be good to go.
Are Root Canals Safe?
A few years ago, a documentary came out alleging that a root canal was responsible for the filmmaker’s cancer. Since then, much research has been conducted to see if this was possible, and there has been absolutely no evidence that it is. Unfortunately, the myth proliferated, and as a result, some people believe it. The good news is that it’s not, however in some cases the damage is already done.
Alternatives to Root Canals
You may be wondering what, if any, alternative treatments are to a root canal. Unfortunately, tooth infections do not heal on their own and must be treated or they could spread to your other teeth, or even cause fatal infections elsewhere in the body. Thus, the only other possible treatment is tooth extraction, which is not recommended as this can cause bone deterioration if not addressed. In some cases, your dentist may not be able to save your tooth even with a root canal and extraction may be your only option, however this is only done as a last resort.
Remember, despite what you may have heard through the grapevine, root canals do not cause cancer, and they are a completely safe way to protect your teeth from potentially fatal infection. If you have any questions or concerns about the procedure, speak to your dentist for further information.
