Why Did You Decide to Become a Dentist?
Dr. Whitmore's journey to dentistry began with childhood fear. Like many children, he was terrified of dental visits, and the only dentist who could successfully treat him was his aunt. Her gentle, caring approach transformed what could have been traumatic experiences into comfortable ones.
This profound impact inspired young Austin. He idolized his aunt and recognized the incredible difference a compassionate, skilled dentist could make in someone's life. Today, as an endodontist specializing in root canal therapy, Dr. Whitmore finds the most rewarding aspect of his job is taking patients out of pain. This mission connects directly back to his childhood experiences and continues to motivate him every day.
Service Before Specialty: A Unique Path to Endodontics
Dr. Whitmore's path to becoming an endodontist took an extraordinary detour through military service. After earning both his undergraduate degree and Doctor of Dental Surgery from the University of the Pacific, he made the decision to serve his country by joining the US Navy.
For four years, Dr. Whitmore served as a Navy dentist at Camp Lejeune and Camp Pendleton, providing dental care to our nation's service members. During his military service, he earned several distinguished honors including the Fleet Marine Force Warfare award and the Armed Forces Service Medal. He also obtained advanced certifications in Tactical Combat Casualty Care and Pre-Hospital Trauma Life Support, giving him unique expertise in handling dental emergencies under challenging conditions.
This military experience shaped Dr. Whitmore's approach to patient care, teaching him to remain calm under pressure, work efficiently, and prioritize patient comfort even in difficult circumstances. These skills serve him well in his endodontic practice, where patients often arrive in pain and anxious about their treatment.
Where Did You Study Endodontics?
After completing his military service, Dr. Whitmore pursued specialized training in endodontics at the prestigious New York University Endodontic Residency program. NYU's program is recognized as one of the finest endodontic training programs in the nation, providing advanced education in root canal therapy, endodontic surgery, and dental trauma management.
During his time at NYU, Dr. Whitmore's dedication to research and clinical excellence was recognized when he won the Resident Award for Oral Research from the American Association of Endodontists. Originally from Honolulu, Hawaii, Dr. Whitmore now calls New York City home. He lives with his wife and their two beloved cats, Toast and Oatmeal, who bring joy and companionship to their household.
His lifestyle is active, as he enjoys working out as often as possible, focusing on weightlifting, biking, and kickboxing. Beyond fitness, he enjoys collecting and caring for plants, which he finds both relaxing and rewarding. He also has a passion for travel, exploring new places whenever possible, and shopping for clothes. Quality time playing with Toast and Oatmeal rounds out his downtime activities.
