Internal Bleaching – New York City
Lighten Your Discolored Teeth

Discoloration of the tooth can occur before or after root canal treatment, and it may cause patients to be unhappy with their smile’s appearance. Thankfully, our team can lend a helping hand! One of the many services we offer is internal bleaching. Internal bleaching involves the temporary placement of a safe oxidizing agent within the tooth in order to gradually lessen the discoloration. Depending on the severity of the dark color (and because the agent’s effectiveness decreases over time), this process might need to be repeated two or three times. What Is Internal Bleaching?
Internal bleaching is kind of like teeth whitening, but from the inside out. Sometimes, teeth become discolored from the inside due to injury, disease, or root canal treatment. Unlike traditional teeth whitening that most patients are familiar with, where teeth whitening agents are applied to the outside of the tooth, internal bleaching is done from the inside using chemical means. Once the bleaching agent is placed within the tooth, it removes discoloration and restores the tooth’s natural appearance.
Who Needs Internal Bleaching?
In most cases, internal bleaching is usually recommended for patients who have undergone root canal treatment followed by darkening of the tooth. It can also be effective for those who have experienced discoloration due to injury or trauma, resulting in internal bleeding that stains the inside of the tooth.
What Is the Internal Bleaching Procedure?
The process of internally bleaching the teeth looks something like this:
- First, your endodontist will make a small opening in the back of the affected tooth.
- Next, the bleaching agent is placed within the tooth. Then, the opening is temporarily sealed.
- The bleach is left in the tooth for a period of time so it can lighten the tooth’s color.
- Lastly, you will return to the dental office. The bleach is removed, and the opening is sealed.
