Root canal therapy is not nearly as scary or uncomfortable as some people make it out to be. However, it is still understandable if you just want to “get it over with.” But how long will that take? How long might you be in the treatment chair, and what can you expect during your recovery? This blog post shares some important information.
What Happens During Root Canal Therapy?
Root canal therapy can take a bit of time because it is a complex and detail-intensive treatment. During it, your endodontist (dentist who specializes in root canal treatment) must carefully access your tooth’s interior and clean out damaged or infected tissue. This involves cleaning out the small root canals, hollow spaces in the roots of teeth that house pulp (a soft substance that has nerves and connective tissues).
Even with an advanced microscope and other helpful tools, your endodontist will take as much time as necessary to provide high-quality treatment.
Once your tooth is cleaned out, it must be filled with a material called gutta-percha to help it retain its shape and strength.
How Long Does Root Canal Therapy Take?
One of the biggest factors that determines the length of root canal therapy is the specific tooth that requires treatment.
- Molars: Treating molars takes the longest amount of time, with treatment often ranging between 60 and 90 minutes. This is because molars have more complex anatomy than other teeth. In fact, they have multiple root canals, which naturally require more time for cleaning, shaping, and sealing.
- Premolars: Root canal therapy for premolars may take about 45 to 75 minutes. These teeth usually have one or two canals, making the procedure slightly less time-consuming compared to molars.
- Front teeth (incisors and canines): The treatment duration for front teeth is usually the shortest, averaging 30 to 60 minutes. These teeth generally have a single root canal, which makes for a simpler process overall.
Hopefully, time will seem to pass quickly when you are in the treatment chair. Your dental team will do all they can to create a comfortable experience.
Recovery Timeline
Once your root canal therapy is completed, you will move into the recovery phase of your care. The worst of the soreness should start to subside within just a few days, and any lingering discomfort is likely to be gone within mere weeks.
Your care team will provide instructions to help you facilitate an efficient and smooth recovery. For example, you may need to avoid certain foods and take pain relievers. It is also vital that you attend recommended follow-up appointments with either your endodontist or dentist, especially if you need a crown for the treated tooth.
Root canal therapy can take a bit of time, but it is a worthwhile endeavor for your long-term oral health! Ask your care provider if you have questions about what to expect during this restorative treatment.
